SXSW Eco is taking over Brush Square Park with art + design installations and special programming, all free and open to the public.

The Place by Design Outdoor Lounge at Brush Square Park transforms one of Austin's original public spaces into a place of pop-up discovery, experimentation and fun. For the three days of SXSW Eco, we've invited artists + designers to reimagine this underutilized, accessible green space in Austin's downtown.

One of the original squares of Austin, Brush Square has been bisected by development and long ignored by mostly everyone. In the coming years, the square will be redeveloped into the Transit Hub of Austin. SXSW Eco's takeover of Brush Square reimagines its potential in the spirit of Place by Design. Come check out the installations for yourself and contribute your ideas of how this park could be a valuable resource to the people of downtown Austin.

The PXD Outdoor Lounge is presented by Southwest Airlines and inspired by their Heart of the Community Program, which believes public spaces are connection points and the heart of every local community.

How Austin Moves by TBG Partners

HOW AUSTIN MOVES

Examining the evolution of Austin mobility, this interactive exhibit will engage patrons and catalyze contemplation about the past, present and future of Austin’s transit infrastructure. This playful but poignant take on one of Austin’s most pressing issues, mass transit, will spark a dialog about how we can alleviate congestion — and preserve quality of life from the growing gridlock.

PARK(ING) DAY INSTALLATION by BOOM_

Austin is great at immersive, large-scale festivals, but at times it feels the everyday spaces and moments in our City are overlooked. Boomspace is a tactical urbanism collaborative dedicated to bringing live music and performances to the streets of Austin. We've designed a movable, modular set for pop-up shows and installations to activate small-scale public spaces at any time.

Refractor by Seattle Design Nerds

Refractor

ReFRACTOR was conceived as an installation that could quickly bring a variety of activation to the public spaces of Seattle using an inflatable structure that expands from a 3’ x 2’ cart to a 315sf circular room. The pace has been used as a pop-up dance space, lantern, photo studio, and even a game-day theater for those without access to television.

Storytelling in Design by XCOOP

STORYTELLING IN DESIGN

Dialogue brings communities together. In a time where individuals are increasingly isolated, we need to establish a new common identity. By observing how people interact in public spaces, we concluded that we need a new urban platform that facilitates dialogue.
