We're excited to announce that two initiatives begun at SXSW Eco will be implemented this March at SXSW to help us meet our sustainability goals. First off, we're working with Austin's Green Mountain Energy Company to reduce the event’s carbon footprint by offsetting the estimated greenhouse gas emissions created by all 3200+ SXSW speakers' travel and hotel stays. Green Mountain is the nation’s longest serving renewable energy retailer and is headquartered in Austin, making it a perfect local and sustainable fit for the event.

Secondly, we are expanding the SXSW Eco Exhibition upcycling program to this year's SXSW Trade Show. This service, provided in partnership with SpinFish Event Solutions, enables exhibitors to donate leftover materials to local community members. At SXSW Eco 2013 almost all exhibitors participated in the program and over 25 unique recipients, including nonprofit organizations, artists, business owners and individual community members, claimed materials after the event. More than 1,200 pounds of waste were diverted from the landfill - a 99% diversion rate! Exhibitors reported being grateful that this service was available during load-out.

With this program expanded to the 2014 SXSW Trade Show, all 250+ Exhibitors will have the opportunity to participate, free of charge. We anticipate that over 10,000 pounds of waste will be diverted, and that thousands of local community members will benefit.
